Rearview mirrors are essential for checking behind you and for safe riding. If your rear view is not clear, you need to adjust them to a position where you can see well.

The correct adjustment procedure for motorcycle rearview mirrors is as follows:

Mount the motorcycle and assume a riding posture
Adjust the mirror position
Make fine adjustments

① Mount the motorcycle and assume a riding posture

First, straddle the motorcycle, straighten it, and hold the handlebars straight as if you were riding, then adjust the rearview mirrors.

If you adjust the mirrors while hunched over or leaning too far forward, they will be misaligned when you actually ride, so always make adjustments while in your usual riding posture.

Once you are on the motorcycle in your usual riding posture, proceed to adjust the left and right mirrors.

② Adjust the mirror position

Motorcycle rearview mirrors can be adjusted up, down, left, right, and diagonally. While the optimal position and angle vary by person, the basic adjustment is as follows:

Left side	Left lane behind, diagonally behind to the left, a little of your left arm
Right side	Right lane behind, diagonally behind to the right, a little of your right arm

Adjust the mirrors to an angle where you can see the lane behind you (directly behind you) and diagonally behind. Ideally, your shoulder or arm should be visible slightly in the inner part of the rearview mirror (about a quarter of the mirror's total area).

Depending on the shape of the rearview mirror (round, square, etc.), the visible vertical range may vary slightly, but generally, any rearview mirror should be adjusted so that you can see the lane behind you and a little of your arm or shoulder.

③ Make fine adjustments

After roughly adjusting the rearview mirrors, check the rear again in the mirrors and fine-tune the angle up, down, left, and right to get a wide view of the rear.

If your shoulder is obstructing the view, point the mirror slightly outwards. If your shoulder or arm is not visible in the mirror, point it slightly inwards.

Precautions

If you adjust the rearview mirrors so that none of your body is reflected, it becomes difficult to gauge distance and angle. Therefore, aim to have a small portion of your arm reflected (about one-quarter of the mirror's surface).

It is not advisable for both rearview mirrors to only show what is directly behind you (creating blind spots diagonally behind to the left and right). Also, an angle that makes it difficult to see due to vibrations while riding is not good. Since it takes practice to get used to the distance visible in the mirrors, it's best to make fine adjustments after riding a few times.

① Mirror shifts (moves) while riding

If your motorcycle's rearview mirror shifts while riding, it is highly likely that the locking nut or bolt at the base of the mirror arm is loose.

The causes of loose locking nuts or bolts can be wear and tear due to aging, rattling, or loosening due to accumulated vibrations while riding.

If the loosening is due to accumulated vibrations, tightening the locking nut or bolt with a wrench (to the proper torque) or applying a threadlocker (anti-loosening agent) can resolve the issue. Adding washers if necessary can also make it more resistant to loosening.

If the fastening parts are worn out due to aging, replacement with new parts is necessary. (Part cost: around 1,000 yen, labor cost: from 1,000 yen)

② Mirror angle adjustment shifts easily / cannot maintain position

If the rearview mirror's angle shifts easily with just a light touch and cannot maintain its position even after adjustment, there is likely a problem with the movable part.

This is caused by a loose ball joint (movable part) of the mirror, resulting in insufficient internal friction.

This can be improved by inserting a rubber sheet or anti-slip material into the joint, or by removing old grease with a parts cleaner to increase friction. However, if these methods don't work, consider replacing the mirror itself.

③ Mirror vibrates and is hard to see

If the rearview mirror vibrates and becomes difficult to see when the engine is on, it means the motorcycle's vibrations are directly transmitted to the rearview mirror.

This symptom occurs when the rearview mirror itself is too light or not securely fastened. It can be improved by replacing it with a vibration-damping mirror or by inserting rubber washers or anti-vibration rubber into the stay.

Also, if the rearview mirror is resonating, changing its length, shape, or type (e.g., from a handle type to a bar-end type) may help.

Preventive measures you can take

Regularly tightening the rearview mirror (especially before long tours) can prevent it from loosening and failing to maintain its angle.

Additionally, avoid pressing or hitting the mirror forcefully, or touching it unnecessarily. When parking or storing, be careful not to bump it against walls or other objects.
