There is no clear standard for when to replace a sprocket; it is a very ambiguous decision.
One factor that can be used to make this decision is "tooth wear."
If the teeth become pointed, or the belly or sides are worn down, it's time for a replacement.
If you only replace one of the three components (front sprocket, rear sprocket, and chain) and not all three simultaneously, the worn parts that were not replaced will cause the new parts to fail to perform at their best and shorten their lifespan. Therefore, from a long-term perspective, replacing all three simultaneously is recommended for greater longevity.
