There is no clear standard for when to replace a sprocket, making it a very ambiguous decision.
One factor to consider is "wear on the teeth."
If the teeth become pointed, or if the belly or sides are worn down, it's time for a replacement.
Replacing all three components—front and rear sprockets and chain—simultaneously is recommended. If you only replace one component, the worn parts you didn't replace will prevent the new part from performing optimally and lasting as long as it should, leading to an earlier replacement. In the long run, replacing all three simultaneously is more durable.

As a general guideline for normal driving, inspect your sprockets approximately every 1000 km (regular lubrication significantly extends the life of sprockets and chains).
The larger the gear ratio (rear sprocket teeth ÷ front sprocket teeth), the more acceleration-oriented the setup. The smaller the ratio, the more top speed-oriented.
