One factor that can help in making this decision is "wear on the tips of the teeth."
If the tips of the teeth become pointed, or if the belly or sides are worn down, it's time for a replacement.
Simultaneous replacement of all three: front and rear sprockets and chain. If you only replace one of these, the worn parts that haven't been replaced will prevent the new parts from performing at their full potential and durability, leading to premature replacement.
