"Wear on the tooth tips" is the determining factor in such cases.
It is time to replace the sprocket when the tooth tips become pointed, or the belly or sides are worn down.
Replacing all three parts—front and rear sprockets and chain—simultaneously is recommended. If you only replace one of them, the worn parts that haven't been replaced will cause the new parts to underperform and wear out faster, reducing their lifespan. Therefore, replacing all three simultaneously is ultimately better in the long run.
Changing the gear ratio will cause an error in the speedometer reading, so it is recommended for race use.
