The heat rating needs to be selected to keep the spark plug tip temperature within the optimal range, taking into account the rise in combustion temperature due to increased engine output and operating conditions.
Simply increasing the heat rating alone will not improve engine performance.
Generally, heat ratings of 7-8 are used for street driving, 8-9 for track day specifications, and 9-10 for race specifications.
Recently, due to advancements in ignition system performance, there is almost no difference whether a plug has a resistor or not.
Resistor-type plugs will become the mainstream going forward.
Conversely, non-resistor type plugs may cause engine trouble in some models of certain vehicle types.
